All Inclusive may Include Death!

A Wisconsin family has reached out to the U. S. State Department to get answers about the death of their daughter Abbey Conner. The family had checked into The Iberostar Paraiso in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.  The family was supposed to have met for dinner, but concerns began to grow when Abbey and her brother Austin did not arrive to meet their mother and step-father.  A healthy Abbey was found unconscious in waist-deep water with a broken collar bone. Austin was found unconscious in the pool with a golf-ball size injury to his head. One of Austin's last memories  was that he and his sister were at the bar having drinks. The family had major concerns of foul play after learning that both children were taken to a Mexican hospital some 14 miles away. The family of Abbey would later make the decision to donate her organs.

Many media outlets have reported that an alarming percentage of  alcohol in Mexico is "bad" and  has been mixed with grain alcohol or methanol, which is a cheaper alternative to producing ethanol. In 2015, a report from Mexico’s Tax Administration Service found that 43 percent of the alcohol consumed in the nation is illegal and produced under unregulated circumstances resulting in potentially dangerous concoctions. In 2017, the country's Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risk reported that the  national health authority in Mexico has seized more than 1.4 million gallons of adulterated (poor-quality) alcohol. Since 2010, this alcohol was not only from small local establishments, but from hotels and other entertainment areas.

While many tourists are often aware of the dangers of drinking water in Mexico, there is a new danger that tourists need to look out for and avoid. U.S. travelers should avoid drinking any alcoholic beverages while traveling to Mexico or any foreign destination

It's my Passport and I am Keeping it Safe!

How to protect your passport while travelling internationally

If you are travelling outside the United States, it is highly recommended that you have a passport. The purpose of a passport is to confirm that you are a United States citizen. Since 2011, U.S. State Department has had an increase in passport applications. In 2016, some 18,676,547 passports were issued to U.S. citizens. While travelling abroad you should always take special care in  safely securing your passport at all times!

Here are F-I-V-E helpful tips to help you secure or replace your passport  while traveling internationally.

1. Purchase a traveler's body safe to keep your travel documents safe. This handy contraption is  an inconspicuous way to keep your cash and credit cards out of the hands of pick-pockets. Invest in a protective cover for your passport. Do not let your passport get wet or damaged.

2.  Make multiple copies of your passport. Place one in your carry on luggage and one in your wallet or purse. Always leave a copy of your passport with a trusted friend or relative.

3. Always sleep with your passport on you. While at the hotel do not leave your passport laying around in your room. Just to be on the safe-side, never allow your passport to leave your sight. Remember, the hotel staff may enter your room while you are away, so always keep your passport on you.

4. If you lose your passport contact the U.S. Embassy and Consular immediately. In most cases, you will need a police report and any costs associated with replacing your passport.

5. Once you return to the United States make sure to keep a watchful eye on your credit card accounts and credit reports. Remember, criminals only need a small piece of your identification in order to assume your American identity.

Travelers Beware and Know Your Legal Rights!

How many of us remember Michael Fay? While traveling in Singapore, Fay  was charge with vandalism. In 1994, he was sentenced to flogging, which meant that he would be repeatedly hit on the buttocks with a rattan cane.  At the time, President Bill Clinton viewed the punishment too extreme and inhumane.  Fay's sentence was later reduce to four strikes, four  months in jail, and a $3500 fine in Singapore dollars ($2214 in U.S. currency).

In March 2016, Otto Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years hard labor in North Korea. Warmbier's crime was attempting to steal a propaganda poster.  His parents have maintained that their son was tortured, terrorized, and brutalized. In fact, they were unaware that Warmbier was in a coma for over a year.  North Korea stated that the cause of coma was due to a sleeping pill or botulism.  Doctors in the United States would later reveal that Warmbier was in a vegetative state. It was announced that Warmbier died on today.

It is crucial for Americans to learn and understand the laws of the country that they plan to visit. Our United States Bill of Rights are not UNIVERSAL! What does that mean? The laws in the United States are for Americans residing in the U.S.   In some countries, you can be searched at will and even held prisoner because a  police officer may feel that you are behaving suspiciously. It behooves any traveler to research the laws and customs of the country that they plan to visit before he or she leaves the United States.

Here are a few tips if you are arrested:

1.  Politely ask the authorities to contact the U.S. Embassy and Consular.
2.  Remain calm and friendly.
3. If you are allowed to use the phone, you may want to call the U.S. Embassy and Consular.
4. Contact family and friends and let them know where you are and give them an exact location of where you are being held.
5. The assistance that you receive from the U.S. Embassy and Consular is very limited. They can not:
  • Get you out of jail
  • Pay legal fees or act as an attorney on your behalf
  • Be responsible for legal, medical, or other fees incurred
  • State that you are guilty or innocent of any criminal charges
Your trip abroad can become dangerous or even deadly. American should always respect the laws and customs of the country that they decide to visit.  Stay vigilant, stay informed, and stay safe! For more information visit: https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/emergencies/arrest.html

A Promise that Begins with a Program

The Davon Green Franklin Foundation's
Surviving Spring Break(101) Program

It would take about two weeks after Davon's passing for the parents of Davon Green Franklin to spring into action.  Davon's parents promised their son that they would continue to share his story in an effort to the save lives of other travelers who may put themselves at risk while traveling internationally. The shock of losing Davon to a preventable spring break tragedy was the driving force to launch the Surviving Spring Break 101 program (SSB101).  The  (SSB101) program was designed to help individuals understand the hidden dangers of international travel.  Over the last seven years, thousands of students have taken the Surviving Spring Break 101 safety pledge.

For the Franklin's, spring break is always just around the corner, so they are always looking for ways to share Davon's message. Many college students consider the Surviving Spring Break 101 program a tradition on their campuses. After hearing and participating in the (SSB101) program, some students have declared that they come back each year for a refresher.  Some individual's that attend (SSB101) for the first time are usually reflecting on some of their past travel mistakes; while others gently wipe tears from their faces.

The Davon Green Franklin Foundation partners with Howard University each year to promote spring break travel safety awareness through “Surviving Spring Break – 101”, a program designed to reduce the incidence of Spring Break tragedies. This program has actively engaged students at Howard University, Morgan State University, Copping State College, Tulane University, Dillard University, Towson University, Stevenson University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Maryland Institutes of College of Art, and the Community College of Baltimore County-Catonsville. Students are given the opportunity to take the Surviving Spring Break pledge: “I pledge to refuse, reduce, and remove all risks associated with Spring Break."

The Davon Green Franklin Foundation needs your help in assuring that Surviving Spring Break 101 is able to continue saving lives.  The Davon Green Franklin Foundation believes: Spring Break is no longer a respite from the rigors of academics; it is potentially dangerous and even deadly. Davon's parents never expected that he would not return from his spring break travel alive, but one thing is for certain, his story has helped to save countless lives and his legacy lives on.

Don't Just Live A Life; Leave A Legacy.

The Importance of the Davon Green Franklin Legacy Scholarship Fundraiser

The
Davon Green Franklin Foundation
Legacy Scholarship

Don't Just Live A Life; Leave A Legacy.
~Davon Green Franklin

It was in the tenth grade, while attending Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, Baltimore, County - a profound thought entered Davon's mind to start a foundation. Davon rushed home to share his brilliant idea with his parents. He stated that when he finished college; he would start the Davon Green Franklin Foundation in order to help more students attend college. It was at the family's sacred desk that he coined the phrase: "Don't Just Live a Life; Leave a Legacy." Even as a high school student, Davon understood the importance of earning a college degree was not only important for himself, but for others as well.

Davon was a graduate of Western School of Technology and Environmental Science and class president for the class of 2005. Davon was a participant in the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville-Upward Bound Program from 2001-2005. At the time of his passing, he was a candidate for a Bachelor of Science Degree from Howard University in May 2010.   While attending Howard University in Washington, D.C., Davon became a Howard University Campus Pal and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Davon was a beloved student at Howard University and at Western School of Environmental Science in Catonsville, Maryland.

The Davon Green Franklin Foundation awarded its first scholarship within months of Davon's passing.  Many of Davon's friends, family members, and individuals from the community have helped to champion this great cause. The Davon Green Franklin Foundation is committed honoring Davon's legacy by awarding scholarships in Davon's memory. Let's face it, college costs a lot more than what it did just seven years ago and by supporting the Davon Green Franklin Legacy Scholarship, you are helping a student with tuition, housing, books, supplies, and even helping to subsidize their meals. The Davon Green Franklin Legacy Scholarship is crucial for our recipients and it helps to secure a  promising future.

Tips before Trips

Top Five Travel Tips
Before You Leave the United States

Before traveling outside of the United States of America, travelers should always take the opportunity to develop a safety plan for themselves and their loved ones. While there are dozens upon dozens of international safety tips, here are our top five travel tips that you should follow before you leave the United States.

1.  Register your trip with the United States  - State Department Travel Website

Never leave the United States without registering your international trip!  While traveling abroad your local embassy or consulate can be your most valuable resource in the event something goes wrong. If there is an attack, natural disaster or medical emergency; the U.S. State Department may be able to assist you. Always locate your embassy or consulate before you leave the U.S.

2. Leave a copy of your itinerary and other pertinent information with someone you trust

Always leave a copy of your itinerary, passport, driver's license, and other pertinent information with a trusted friend or family member.  Make it a point to check in with your emergency contacts during your trip abroad. Contact your banking institutions, and health insurance company to let them know that you are traveling outside of the United States. The last thing you need is for your bank to freeze your account. It could take days for them to release your funds.

3. Visit the Centers for Disease Control - Travelers website

The CDC travelers website issues travel health notices that can assist travelers with making an informed decision on whether or not their health will be impacted while traveling to foreign countries.

4. Make an appointment with your doctor as well as your dentist and speak with your pharmacist

Do not travel abroad without a visit to your doctor. He or she can decide if you will need additional vaccinations, medications, or tests prior to leaving the U.S. If you have not had your six month dental exam, stop what you are doing, and call your dentist to schedule your visit before your upcoming trip. Remember, you are traveling into a lesser developed country and you would not want to receive dental services that could negatively impact your health.

5. Research Travelers Insurance and contact your health insurance carrier

Travel insurance companies require you to pay upfront and then you will need to file a claim. Travel insurance can help absorb the costs associated with lost baggage, terrorism and travel, cancellation of trip, airlift and evacuation, accidental death and dismemberment. While we recommend you have travel insurance, it is important that you are able to pay for any medical costs you incur at the time of service.

The Davon Green Franklin Foundation Presents: Real Travelers - Real Stories

Start by telling us about yourself and some of the international destinations in which you have traveled.

My name is Dana B.  and I have been traveling very actively for past three years. My first big trip was to Africa. During the  summer of 2014, I travelled four consecutive weeks.  I traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. I went with a travel company called G - Adventures since maneuvering around Africa isn't easy. I also had a long layover in London on my way to Africa.

Summer 2015 is what I consider my first real backpacking experience. I went to Israel, Greece, Italy, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Iceland. That was about 6 and a half weeks. I fell in love with Iceland, so I went back that following winter for 5 days. That same year for spring break, I backpacked Costa Rica.

In summer 2016, I went to South and Central America. I started in Bolivia and went to Peru where I trekked to Machu Picchu as well as taking in other amazing sights and experiences; however, Machu Picchu was certainly the highlight of South America. I then ventured up to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala for another 4 weeks.

This past spring break, April 2017, I backpacked through Nicaragua for 12 days. This upcoming summer, I have a flight booked to Vietnam. I plan to explore Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. If I have time, I would like to see Indonesia as well.

Have you ever experienced any problems while traveling outside of the United States?

I have had a few bumps in the road for sure! Just off the top of my head, I’ve had bed bugs, having to change flights at the spur of the moment, a lousy travel partner, lack of preparation, and the latest is that my cellphone and tablet were  stolen! Most of them had easy solutions though! My partner and I decided to split up and it ended up being a wonderful trip. I planned for South America very poorly unfortunately. I didn't realize I needed a Visa for Bolivia, so I was in full panic mode at the airport, but I definitely learned a lesson. I was lucky enough to get to the airport and they quickly issued me a travel Visa.

I keep in touch with my mom, so she helps me with changes to my flights or issues with my credit card. She has been incredibly helpful. When I lost my phone, I got on the hostel’s computer and contacted my mom. She immediately called my travelers insurance for me to see what I needed to do. She also contacted Verizon to cancel and wipe out my phone. My biggest advice is have contact with someone back at home that you can contact if things go wrong. You should either have a family member or close friend that has your information and access to your accounts. If they don’t have access before the trip, definitely give them access. My mom having access to my accounts has been a TREMENDOUS help these past few years.

Have you ever been sick while traveling?

Fortunately, I have never been terribly sick, but I consider bed bugs the WORST thing that's ever happened to me on an international trip (even worse than getting my phone stolen!). I was lucky to be able to have found an English speaking doctor who was wonderful. I did have trouble getting the necessary medication that I needed because the pharmacies didn’t carry what the doctor recommended and they also didn’t speak English at all. So be aware of possible language barriers while traveling abroad.  Also, when I went to Bolivia getting acclimated was tough because the country is so high above sea level. I was sick for 3-4 days, but I was expecting it, so I wasn't too shocked.

It is important to learn from mistakes and be prepared. Now, I go to my primary care physician and get TONS of meds before I travel.  I stock up on items such as altitude pills to get acclimated to the new environment, nausea pills, and I have added a cream that kills mites and other bugs to my medication list. I hope to able to avoid that problem if it occurs again.  I also bring antibiotics just in case I get a stomach bug while traveling. I bring a generous supply of bug spray as well! I highly recommend that you do the same.  This will save you from hours and hours of itching and misery of bug bites and can also protect you from  many diseases.

What do you do to prepare before your trips abroad?

I get travelers insurance for each trip. I choose the best option they offer  because  it covers so much. Most insurance  will cover airlifts out of the country in case of emergencies. Travelers insurance helps out when you get ill, or in the event your property is lost or stolen.  It came in handy when my phone was stolen. I ended up getting $500 back which was nice. I don't remember about registering my trip with the United States- State Department. I know I don't for short trips.

Have you ever felt unsafe during any of your international trips?

I have actually never felt unsafe. While In Africa, I had a funny experience,  I was being followed in the airport and I got nervous for a second. Finally, the guy came up to me and asked if I was Britney Spears and wanted my autograph! Another incident occurred in Bolivia which was awkward in the beginning because I was  feeling a little off (from the altitude) and the city was so poor. I definitely didn't wander around while in  La Paz far or alone, so it was fine.

What are your top 5 travel tips?

Top 5 travel tips-

1-     Don't go anywhere you aren't 100% comfortable. Always look confident even if you are lost. Locals can definitely sense if you're uncomfortable and can take advantage of you. It's important to know what you're getting into to prevent problems.  Also, don't go anywhere without telling someone else where you are headed. If you leave the hostel or hotel, let it be known you're leaving with multiple people. I call my mom every single time I have WiFi and tell her I'll be back within X amount of hours and tell her if she doesn’t hear from me within that time then call hostel or hotel. I provide her with all the contact information for the places where I am staying and people the I am traveling with. My mom tortures them!! Don't go anywhere alone unless it's HIGHLY populated and definitely be aware of surroundings. Keep eyes in front of you. Don't look at phone or look too touristy. Again, you'll get taken advantage of.

2-     Know the land and where you're going before you venture off. I recommend TripAdvisor. They let you download cities when you’re connected to WiFi and you can view these cities when you are off WiFi. You can check out restaurants, local attractions, and even get a map that follows you as you move about therefore, it  is INCREDIBLY helpful.

3-     Try not to look at a map too obviously. If you do look at a map keep it hidden, maybe in a store or café. I trust people in these types of places more than people on the streets. Several touristy cities have tourist shops, so take advantage of these places when you stumble upon them. If you need directions your best bet is hotels. Cops are good too.  I found that hotel staff are very helpful and accommodating. In the past, I have had to rely on them because many of them do speak English and know the area well .

4-     Be smart with your belongings. Bring a lock and always secure your  passport, money, and other valuables.  Also, while exploring cities, do not take out valuables!  In fact don't bring any valuable with you on your trips abroad  This makes you a target. I keep a (trendy) fanny pack on me at all times.  I put my shirt or jacket over it to conceal it and I use a rubber band to lock the zippers. This prevents me being a target for pick-pocketers!

5-     Stay with groups. Night life especially. If you chose to venture, backpack, or wander  follow a familiar trail.   Make decisions off of other traveler's experiences. I always use  recommended travel destinations.

Any final tips?

I hope I helped you with your planning! Two of my biggest tips: One, Secure your personal belonging and be safe when you walk around with your trendy bags. Two, Don’t have a big bag that isn’t secure or too far away from your body.

Also, BRING MEDS! I honestly think that you can't have too many medications because they're not easily accessible in some countries. Sometimes they're different and if you can't find what you need or want and  you can't speak language,  it's nearly impossible to get what you need. It is better be prepared. Also, the food in other places can be unsettling, so you can't be too safe if you take an antidiarrheal or nausea pill ahead of time. It has happened to me before, especially in Africa - where I just took them to be safe.

How did you find out about the Davon Green Franklin Foundation?

I found out about the Davon Green Franklin Foundation because I am fortunate enough to work with one of the founders! I support the mission of the foundation because I believe that there are people that travel the globe, and they may not follow the best safety practices while traveling abroad. The work of the Davon Green Franklin Foundation  is invaluable and it has definitely shaped how I travel. I can only imagine how difficult the experience was for the Franklin family.  I try my hardest to be as safe and informed as possible. I don't want to make similar errors or have my family experience a similar misfortune. I want to make sure everyone is comfortable with my traveling experiences.  I keep my mother informed on everything I do and everywhere I go while I am away. Before every trip, I make a spreadsheet about tentative days,  plans,  hostels, and other pertinent information. My mom always has an idea of where I am going to be!  I literally call her 15 times a day!
